    Dear Rem Dawg,
We haven’t met (although you did sign an autograph for me when I was about 12), but I’m one of the other finalists, Rob Crawford. Just want to let you know I think you are a superior baseball color commentator, and I want to thank you for helping educate my 8 year-old son in the finer points of the game. Through your commentary you have taught him so much about baseball. Like a sponge, he soaks up everything you say and remembers it. Sometimes, weeks later, he’ll say something about a player, or about a certain play, or about the game of baseball that he learned from you on TV. Also, I am incredibly impressed with your multi-media presentation here on your blog. It makes this whole campaign process more fun for all of us to see you taking it so seriously. And remember that no matter what happens in this 2007 election, millions of Sox fans will perceive you as president of Red Sox Nation for years and years, regardless of your official title. There’s no need for an election to prove your immortal, venerable stature in RSN. I thank you, and wish you all the best,

    — Rob Crawford

Dear Rem Dawg–I was one of the top 40 (hey, remember that from our youth? Being in the top 40 meant something!) but didn’t make the first cut. I am one of the few candidates who remembers watching you play second base for the Red Sox. I am also an out-of-market viewer on MLB.com and often have to endure the comments of the opposing team’s broadcasting team. It can get pretty ugly some times, but sometimes it’s interesting to hear what they have to say about the Sox. I truly look forward to the times when I get to hear you and Don. With that said, however, if you were elected president of RSN, what would you do for the average fan who often feels neglected? Back when you played, and even before that, the players came to the sides of the field and talked to the kids before the games. I know that, for security reasons, we can’t expect that any more. But what kinds of outreach would you do? Would you address the ticket issues? Fans like me who have no connections simply cannot get tickets. I am a member of RSN, as well as RemDawg Nation, and I have yet to benefit from either membership vis-a-vis tickets. I did get one set of tickets this year through RSN because I bought the higher priced package at the beginning of the year. But beyond that, since I live three-and-a-half hours away, I can’t just stroll on over to the park and see if there are tickets available. I really hate this Stub Hub deal that’s being talked about. What is your position on that? Back when you were playing, I lived on the South Shore and attended probably 30-40 games a year. Now I’m lucky to see one or two in person and have to rely on MLB.com, unless the Sox are playing the Yankees, and then it is unbearable to listen to the Yankee commentators tear apart the team I love. What is your advice to those of us “out here” on these issues?

By the way, I should add that I have been a broadcaster myself for almost 30 years and was at the 1978 playoff game…

    Hi Jerry,
I am a card carrying, founding member of Red Sox Nation. I am also the founder of the Red Sox Group on Eons, a website for those of us over 50 years of age. I’ve been a Sox fan for 40+ years. Since leaving the Boston area in 1974, following my team has been quite difficult until the internet came along. I followed them on MLB Gameday Audio for several years, until we got DSL in our area 2 years ago so I could watch on MLB-TV. Red Sox Nation has the opportunity to set the example for other teams’ fan base all over the country.

I pay $80/year to watch MLB-TV, yet because of MLB’s contract with Fox Network, I am blacked out from seeing any Saturday afternoon games they might play, unless they are playing the Yankees, as my Fox region only carries Yankees & Mets games. As a subscriber to Gameday Audio, I can choose what station I want to listen to, whether home or away. But, with MLB-TV, I do not get to choose to listen to my team’s broadcast, as I am forced to listen only to the station MLB-TV is broadcasting. I know I could have a choice if they would give it to me, as the other night in Tampa, for one-half inning, in the middle of the game, NESN’s broadcast was accidentally picked up by MLB-TV. This proves MLB could provide the fans with the viewing option but they choose not to do so.

I added NESN to my Dish Network subscription this year at an additional cost of $72/year over my regular monthly charge, thinking this would allow me to watch all the games on NESN. Once again, MLB screws the fans over because, even though I am paying extra to view NESN, I cannot view any Red Sox programming that NESN carries, except the pre-game show and the post-game show. I can watch the Red Sox Report, but not The Ultimate Red Sox Show. I cannot view the Red Sox Hall of Fame Dinner, Sox Appeal, or any other “NESN Original Programs” that have anything to do with the Red Sox, because even though I am paying for the right to view NESN, MLB says I am out-of-market and forbidden to view the programming. Baseball fans are being cheated by MLB.

Red Sox Nation could be the leader in demanding Congress and the FCC change the National Blackout Policy. The internet and satellite television has made us one global community. There is no “out-of-market” viewing except as MLB deems it.

Red Sox Nation is not only in New England. Those fans you see in the other cities’ ballparks are not just New Englanders who decided to travel there to see their team. They are also transplanted New Englanders. Red Sox Nation truly covers the world. So, why are all the “giveaways” geared to tickets at Fenway. Why aren’t tickets given to fans in the Baltimore area, or the Cleveland area. The Nation’s database should be able to be “sorted” by region and those members put in a drawing for tickets when the Sox play the team nearest them on the road. Also, why not some special drawings for those of us who hold the “Founding Member” cards and have continued to renew our membership each year. We’re not the “Johnny-come-lately’s”; we’re the faithful who jumped in first and formed the Nation.

    Sincerely,

    Hazel Bayers

A Red Sox second baseman who could actually steal bases–wasn’t that amazing! I guess that was before he took up air guitar! We always knew he had a sense of humor!

    I loved watching Jerry play!

I think if Jerry wins, Big Pupi should be his VP and if Big Pupi wins, Jerry should be the VP. Either way, they’d make a great pair!!!

There have been some great color commentators over the years but I think Jerry and Don are the absolute best!!! That is what I really miss in the postseason and I can’t wait for them to come back on opening day!!!

I’m a member of Red Sox Nation, but I live half way between New York and Philadelphia. You’re the only candidate who has actually addressed Red Sox Nation for those of us who don’t live within driving distance of Fenway Park. Please continue to work on this, even if you don’t win the election.

As Hazel mentioned above, I’ve bought the MLB TV Internet package the past few years, and this year I added the cable tv Sports on Demand option so that I can actually see the faces of the players . But, like Hazel, I’m upset when Fox has the blackout on Saturday afternoon and I can’t watch the game because neither the New York or Philly stations is broadcasting the Red Sox game. And, like Hazel, I’d prefer it if MLB allowed me to choose the NESN broadcast over the ‘other team’ broadcast. I’d like to see you address this!

But there are two things about your candidacy that bother me:

    1) You haven’t posted anything but your original message in this blog – are you actually listening?

    2) Your comments about Doris Kearns Goodwin not being an acceptable RSN presidential candidate because she grew up as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan offends me – I was born in Chicago, and I went to many White Sox games before going away to Boston for college. Does this ‘accident of birth’ make me unfit to be a member of Red Sox Nation?

You are my only choice for President of Red Sox Nation. I love you and Don and the whole NESN gang And I go through withdrawals every year when the season is over, not only do I miss baseball but the two of you. I pray the Sox take it all this year!! I am rooting for them and you Mr. President.

Jerry, You have always had my vote. It is VERY obvious even to the blind that you care very much for the RED SOX
Fans. I have reminded my local and not so local family to cast their vote for you of course. Although it has been 35 years since I have been able to make a game I keep on dreaming that I will again. Keep up the good work. Even when I lived in North Carolina I would call my Dad everyday and he watched every game for me.
